Naomi Campbell On Fear, Fashion & Doing Good, Lensed By Nico For The Edit November 6, 2014

One of the original ‘Supers’ Naomi Campbell is lensed by Nico for The Edit. Styled by Maya Zepinic in in sleek, sensual minimalism, Naomi chats with Harriet Quick about topics that matter to her.

Admitting the she has donned a ‘protection look’ when traveling (mask, latex gloves, bleach and sprays) Naomi has joined with Whoopi Goldberg, Alicia Keys and Idris Elba, to launch the #CrushEbolaNow campaign. Note that Naomi has a London pop-up open from November 28-December 4 to support the new #CrushEbolaNow campaign.

Like so many models today, Naomi is working as an actor, appearing in a Lee Daniels-directed TV drama called ‘Empire’, based on a hip-hop family. Speaking of her fashion family, Naomi refers to Gianni Versace as a ‘brother’ and Azzedine Alaïa as a ‘papa’.  About her close friend John Galliano’s new appointment as creative director of Maison Martin Margiela, Naomi says:

“I’m so happy for him. He’s been in a brilliant place for years, inside and out. John centers me; we giggle like children. I never want to lose the child in myself. It doesn’t matter where [Galliano] goes, what he does – you can’t take away from his talent and what he can do.”

Speaking of her tempestuous past, Campbell explains with confidence “I don’t have to justify myself to anyone. I took off almost five years from work … but I’m a Gemini and I like to keep moving and doing things and being there for friends. If I go against my instincts, there is always a consequence.”

Campbell’s greatest fear is fear itself.

“If you feel fear, fear will come to you. Fear is a terrible thing to have and I’ve been aware of that since I was a kid,” she says. “It can stop you doing things in your life. I don’t want fear to get hold of me.”

Naomi ends her interview with The Edit, rushing off to see Mario Testino. “For a casting. After 28 years, he wants me to go to a casting!”  To her credit, the ‘queen of the catwork’ as The Edit calls her, complies.
