Georgia Fowler at Fiji's Nanuku by Nicole Bentley for Marie Claire Global

Down Under, Spring Is Coming

Model Georgia Fowler is floating down river, finding her happy place off Fiji’s Nanuku beachfront resort. Now 30-years-old, Fowler was first scouted at age 12 and was signed by IMG at age 14. In recent years, that youthful stardom trajectory doesn’t happen — at least not officially.

Photographer Nicole Bentley [IG] focuses on Fowler, with simply beautiful shots, reminding us that summer is arriving for Aussies, as winter bears down on America, Europe and especially Ukraine. The possibility of a dirty bomb being dropped by Russia on Ukraine is far away from this moment — and yet it could shatter our minds in an instant.

This is how we live today . . . on the edge . . . and fashion stories like this one are both soothing and inspiring.

Fowler reflects on her past with Allye Pescoe — especially now that she has daughter of her own with fiancé Nathan Dalah, born in September 2021.

Speaking with Pescoe at home in Sydney, post-fashion shoot styled by Marie Claire fashion director Naomi Smith, Fowler wants a different world for her own daughter. “It’s clear that Georgia is very happy being a mother. There’s a quiet calm to her now,” says Smith.

Georgia Fowler and Shooting Nude with Photographers

“During my early years [as a model], I didn’t really love my body. It was sad. I was constantly comparing myself to other models, training really hard and watching what I ate. I was so young and gorgeous, but I would freak out about eating a chocolate bar,” admits Fowler. “It was only when I fell pregnant with Dylan that I took the walls down in my brain and began to really respect and appreciate my body. I felt so sexy, powerful, and strong. I was creating life inside me; how bloody amazing is that!?”

Georgia Fowler speaks to her comfort level shooting with Nicole Bentley, and the creative synergy they experience because much trust exists between the two women. This is no surprise to Anne of Carversville because we’ve advocated for women photographers for over a decade.

There’s no guarantee about any trust-building relationship in the world of sexual identity and model/photographer.

But few of us miss the days of highly-publicized, bad-boy photographer Terry Richardson running a digital diary in which young models — and older, too — dropped by his studio for sexy photos combined with snaps of Richardson’s sexual apparatus. It was uninspiring to most of us and ultimately demeaning to women. And yet, the reality was widely tolerated by models as part of the job, EICs of major media, and brand leaders.

“When I’m shooting with a woman, like Nicole, who I trust and I adore, I can be completely comfortable because I know they’re going to respect my boundaries and create an amazing image,” explains Fowler. “When I feel empowered, safe, and respected, I’m comfortable with nudity. But that doesn’t mean I’ll be comfortable posing topless with someone else. Just because I’ve shot topless one day, doesn’t mean I’ll do it again the next day. It’s my decision, and it really depends on the shoot and the team.”
