Ta Prohm Temple Is Home To Cambodia’s Female Apsara Spirits AOC Women

Today the conservation and restoration of Ta Prohm — but in a style that pays homage to its current state of nature gone wild — is a partnership between the Archaelogical Survey of India and the APSARA (Authority for the Protection and Management of Angkor and the Region of Siem Reap).

The authorities at APSARA know that Apsara (also spelled as Apsarasa) is a female spirit of the clouds and waters in both Hindu and Buddhist myths. In fact, apsaras are an important motif in the stone bas-reliefs of the Angkorian temples built in Cambodia in the 8th-13th centuries AD.

Several years ago, I quoted Cambodian writer Kounila Keo, who contrasted the history of women in Cambodia and America:

Inside the Minds of 11-Year Olds From Around the WorldGOOD Magazine

I Am Eleven, a new documentary by Australian filmmaker Genevieve Bailey, takes us through six years and 15 countries and into the minds of the world’s 11-year-old kids. Somewhere in between childhood wonder and teenage angst, the film’s young subjects, described by the filmmaker as full of “hope, a clarity of expression, and openness,” talk about subjects like global warming and poverty with the kind of earnestness that only children exhibit. The film, in limited release in New York and San Francisco this month, provides unique, vivid, and at times heartbreaking insight into the effects of racial segregation and economic disparity.

The film has won a number of international awards since its premiere in 2011 and has screened at film festivals in the U.S., Brazil, Spain, and France. The film is Bailey’s first feature documentary; the children she met while filming I Am Eleven later inspired her to found the Darlingheart Foundation, working to empower women and children from disadvantaged communities. Below Bailey talks about her filmmaking journey.

Angelina Jolie to Direct Richard Leakey Biopic for Skydance ProductionsHollywood Reporter

Anne of Carversville founding muse Angelina Jolie unveiled a new project ‘Africa’, a drama described as a ‘sweeping epic’ that tells the story of paleo-archaeologist Richard Leakey and his battle to save the elephant.

Jolie will sit in the director’s chair in a collaboration that will also feature ‘acclaimed cinematographer’ Roger Deakins, who worked with Jolie on ‘Unbroken’.The script is written by Eric Roth.

“I’ve felt a deep connection to Africa and its culture for much of my life, and was taken with Eric’s beautiful script about a man drawn into the violent conflict with elephant poachers who emerged with a deeper understanding of man’s footprint and a profound sense of responsibility for the world around him,” said Jolie.

‘Africa’ will be produced by David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance as well as Jon Peters and Jolie herself.

The Surprising Reason Conservatives Are Happier Than Liberals Huff Po

It’s complicated, that’s for sure. But a provocative new study shows that people who live in countries with liberal governments are happier on average than those who live in countries with conservative governments. As for the connection between an individual’s personal political leanings and his/her happiness, conservatives tend be happier than liberals.

Dr. Adam Okuliez-Kozaryn and colleagues surveyed over one million Europeans living in 16 countries, correlating life satisfaction and political views over a 30-year period. In a seemingly inverted conclusion, the study agrees with earlier ones in which conservatives report being happier. However, it appears conservatives enjoying the benefits of living in countries with more liberal support systems may be the happiest of all.
