Matthew Brookes Eyes New York Disobedience in Action for Mixte Magazine SS 2020

Strong women modesty has a kinky side in Matthew Brookes’ major fashion story for the Spring/Summer 2020 issue of Mixte (Mixed) Magazine. Models Dipti Sharma, Hannah Elyse and Nya Gatbel are styled by Bill Mullen in ‘Trinity part 2, nuns on a mission gone wild in New York as part of the Mixed ‘Disobedience’ issue.

The magazine text leans heavily on the BDSM angle of the editorial, but real life events anchor the imagery in the the COVID-hardy backbones of healthcare workers and protesters in the street for Black Life Matters. Sexuality remains a subtle subtext in today’s gender fluid culture, although a key aspect of #MeToo culture is women owning their sexuality, however it expresses itself.

For me the imagery channels more deeply the early 70s in New York, where the Catholic clergy led the fight for social justice.
