Somali-American model Halima Aden is joining the editorial team of Vogue Arabia as the Diversity Editor-at-Large. Aden becomes part of an expanding commitment at Vogue to showcase racial inclusivity at a time when readers and advertisers are demanding it.
“For me, taking on this project was both important and imperative in order to create bigger conversations within the fashion community,” Halima explains. In her role as Diversity Editor-at-Large, the rising fashion world star will contribute a monthly column highlighting hard-hitting social topics, inspiring personalities, and committed organizations with impactful work.
The hijab-wearing former Miss Minnesota semi-finalist hails from St. Cloud, Minnesota and is now part of the Somali-American Twin Cities community represented by Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. In spite of her international travel schedule and in-demand events appearances, Aden has chosen to return to Minnesota whenever possible.
Known for being a high-achiever, Aden became a UNICEF Ambassador in 2018 at age 20. She delivered a memorable TED Talk in 2018, when she returned to her roots as a baby born in Kakuma, a refugee camp in Kenya, where her family fled the civil war in Somalia.
