Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, Naomi Campbell Urge 9/16 FB, IG Freeze #StopHateForProfit

The search term was generic, but Google delivered a trifecta of Kim Kardashian West stories as the leader of the pack among celebs, influencers and activists freezing their Facebook, Instagram accounts on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2020.

The week of action is the latest effort by the Stop Hate for Profit coalition , led by nine civil rights and advocacy organizations: ADL (Anti-Defamation League), Color of Change, Common Sense, Free Press, LULAC, Mozilla, NAACP, National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) and Sleeping Giants. This week of action is supported by Sacha Baron Cohen, recipient of the 2019 ADL International Leadership Award. The action comes just two weeks after the death of protesters at a Black Lives Matter rally in Kenosha, Wisconsin, which occurred after violent militia groups, including the Kenosha Guard, used Facebook to call for their followers to incite violence.

“We are quickly approaching one of the most consequential elections in American history. Facebook’s unchecked and vague ‘changes’ are falling dangerously short of what is necessary to protect our democracy,” the coalition says on its site. “Facebook’s role in the Kenosha shooting—which was flagged as violating their policies hundreds of times—is a reminder that changing policies without changing enforcement means little. It reinforces the fact that lives are on the line,” said the Stop Hate for Profit coalition group’s PR Release.

Other celebrities have also joined the campaign and posted the same image to their social media pages, including Demi Lovato, Leonardo DiCaprio, Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom, Naomi Campbell, Rosario Dawson, and more.

Katy Perry shared her thoughts and a quote by author George Orwell:

“In a time of deceit telling the truth is a revolutionary act.”
