Marlena Szoka | Benjamin Kanarek | 'Misty' | Harper’s Bazaar China April 2011

Updated: Benjamin’s ‘Misty’ is also featured in Harper’s Bazaar en Espanol’s May 2011 issue, with the addition of three additional images.  Curating is the toughest part of editing, especially with limited print space.

I can see why Harper’s Bazaar Spain would pick up these images, which resonates well with Spanish culture and visions of female sensuality. The sizzle factor is higher in two of the images and the metallic capelet is very Spanish armada, conquistador-looking.

We prefer making love not war, and Marlena wears her power like a benevolent ruler.

The next three images in Harper’s Bazaar en Espanol’s May 2011 issue, but not Harper’s Bazaar China.

Images shown in both Harper’s Bazaar China and Spain.

Original commentary: Benjamin Kanarek creates a sublime, ethereal femininity in his  sensual haze called ‘Misty’, a presentation of Marlena Szoka wearing haute couture from Chanel, Valentino, Gaultier, Armani Prive, Dior, Givenchy, Martin Margiela, Alexandre Vauthier and Elie Saab, dressing the pages of Harper’s Bazaar China.

Benjamin’s editorials are always polished but never typecast. Here he reminds me of a younger Paolo Roversi, which is the mood of this fashion display of female extravagance.

These images are perfect for our first day of spring floral celebration. Woman as flower has inspired many a fashion designer and poets, too.

Editorial credits are shared with Frederique Renaut for co-creative direction and video direction. Styling by fashion editor Sohei Yoshida.
