The Federico Fellini-esque shoot presents Sabri in an Anita Ekberg mood, attempting to create her memorable scene in Rome’s Trevi Fountain. The gold medal swimmer, who is also devoted to yoga, had just completed filming for her first lead role in a TV series, in Hekayti (My Story).

Sabri began her acting career in 2013, appearing in the religious program “Khatawat El Shaytan” (The Devil’s Steps) with the young preacher Moez Masoud. In 2014 she joined the cast of the TV series “Gabel El Helal” (El Helal Mountain) with actor Mahmoud Abdelaziz.

The 30-something star split from her husband of five years in October 2017 because of “different views”.

Like many other influential women in the Middle East, Yasmine Sabri uses her 6.6 million Instagram followers to champion women’s rights and also her work with Syrian refugees. “I’m a feminist,” says the new ambassador for African women. “I’ve always been fascinated by strong women. When I started focusing on women’s rights, going to refugee camps, and working with Arab women who had an affliction, I realized that I had a responsibility to help make an impact.”

Throwaway Culture

Vogue Arabia’s editor-in-chief Manuel Arnaut uses his editor’s letter to not only focus on Yasmine Sabri but to raise the topic of sustainability in fashion. Citing the mind-boggling statistic that the average consumer buys 60% more clothes today than in 2000, Arnaut writes: ““This is relevant to all the citizens of our world, even the ones who don’t take fashion seriously. It is imperative that we change our habits and act while we still can.”

The July/August issue of Vogue Arabia will focus on local brands including Okhtein, Saqhoute and Abadia who are growing role models in the fashion design industry.
