Lung Cancer Now More Deadly Than Breast Cancer Among Women

The French, in particular, believe that smoking is rebelliously chic and a way to stay slim. I say let the darling French smoke as much as they want, but could the fashion industry please stop telling young women in Turkey and Vietnam and Thailand that real chic women smoke.

All thinking people know that lung cancer kills. For the first time in history, lung cancer has passed breast cancer as the leading cause of deaths for women in rich countries. Smoking has long been the leading cause of cancer death in men. This is one gender gap we’re sorry to see women close.

Smoking rates have leveled off and even dropped in rich countries, a trend that should positively impact lung cancer deaths. Why the fashion industry — or specific magazines in the fashion industry — still believe smoking makes you look sexy and in charge defies logic. Sorry, but smoking is stupid.
