Our Deep Sadness for Morocco and Libya

AOC likes the fact that Tyler uses the words “Communion in an everlasting landscape” to describe the shoot. Except “everlasting” seems like an increasingly fragile word today.

Because Tyler set the mood, let us take a moment to consider the confirmed dead in Libya of 5,000 and heading as high as 10,000 in the devastating surge of floodwaters.

And also the growing death toll in our beloved Marrakech — a magical place that means so much to so many of us creatives. The current death toll is at 3,000 and climbing from the earthquake.

The kingdom is finally accepting international search-and-rescue assistance teams beyond the UK, Qatar, Spain and the UAE, writes Al Jazeera. Precious days have been lost however. Major organizations had been ignored in the offers of assistance, including the UN. Al Jazeera writes:

“ United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) usually manages the international response to major disasters and emergencies through its agencies, Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) and the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG).”

Al Jazeera also addresses the situation in the eastern city of Derna in Libya as being “extremely dire”, 36 hours after this catastrophe. So many corpses having shallow burial at the same time can create its own new humanitarian crisis in the form of health problems and disease.

Anne is not comfortable this minute recommending responsible organizations helping. The UN is clearly involved, unlike in Morocco. That we information we verified.

1. Moroccan Red Crescent (MRCS) teams were on the ground immediately, coordinating closely with the IFRC and local authorities to assess the situation, support in the search and rescue operation and provide help to affected people. You can make a donation here.

2. The Emirates Red Crescent began implementing a relief program by providing sizeable quantities of essential supplies, including tents, blankets, food, medical stuff and hygiene kits.You can support their effort here.

3. Doctors Without Borders is among the numerous organizations swiftly responding to the disaster by deploying teams to Morocco. You can make a donation here.

4. UNICEF is currently evaluating the situation and humanitarian requirements in Morocco, with a special focus on children and families who may have been displaced by the earthquake. You can contribute by donating here.

5. CARE’s dedicated teams on the ground are actively engaged in delivering critical emergency services, including water, food, and medical support. You can support their efforts here.
