Madonna launched her role as an ambassador for the 50th anniversary celebrations commemorating riots at New York’s Greenwich Village Stonewall Inn with a New Years Eve drop-in.
Accompanied by her son David Banda on acoustic guitar, the pop star welcomed 2019 in the iconic bar that jump-started the modern LBGTQ movement. Madonna led the crowd in a sing-along of "Like a Prayer" and covered Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love."
"I stand here proudly at the place where pride began, the legendary Stonewall Inn, on the birth of a new year," she said. "We come together tonight to celebrate 50 years of revolution.”
The singer called for peace and understanding in her speech, saying, “If we truly took the time to get to know one another we would find that we all bleed the same color and we all need to love and be loved. Let’s remember who and what we are fighting for — ourselves, for each other, but truly and most importantly, what are we fighting for? Let’s take a minute to reflect on how we can bring more love and peace into 2019, let’s look at how we can bring random acts of kindness. Maybe we can find an opening to bring the light in. Are you ready to do that?"
MSNBC host Joy Reid is again embroiled in controversy with Twitter user @Jamie_Maz about several homophobic posts a decade or more old from her now defunct blog, the Reid Report. When @Jamie_Maz first called Reid out in December 2017, she apologized for certain posts that were mild on the hot sauce menu, but clearly embarrassing given Reid's current success as a first-rate, informed and articulate progressive TV personality.
This example of an alleged Joy Reid comment, tweeted by @Jamie_Maz gets to a fundamental argument between in the 2016 Democratic primary. While he is vague about when the statement was written, this opinion attributed to Reid remains an argument today, even though Democrats are chilled out and fully committed to gay rights, gay marriage, gays in the military and all other gay rights. Today the argument continues around purity test topics like abortion and gun control.
Gay rights activist Edith Windsor, whose landmark Supreme Court case led the US Supreme Court to grant same-sex married couples both federal recognition and a host of federal benefits previously available only to married heterosexuals, died Tuesday in Manhattan at age 88, writes The New York Times.
Her wife Judith Kasen-Windsor, who Windsor married in 2016, confirmed Windsor's death at a Manhattan hospital.
In what is generally regarded as the second most important Supreme Court ruling in America's fight for and against same-sex marriage rights, "the Windsor decision, handed down in 2013, was limited to 13 states and the District of Columbia. But in a more expansive ruling in 2015, in Obergefell v. Hodges and three related cases, the Supreme Court held that same-sex couples had a constitutional right to marry anywhere in the nation, with all the protections and privileges of heterosexual couples. Its historic significance was likened to that of Lawrence v. Texas in 2003, which decriminalized gay sex in the United States."
