Emma Mackey in ‘Sex Education’

Emma Mackey’s success in Netflix’s ‘Sex Education’ lies in its honest, representative storytelling for everyone. The 2020 season explored a wider range of topics including bisexuality, pansexuality and also the character’s world outside of high school.

“I’ve had mums come up to me on the street and thank me and the show for existing, saying that it’s helped them talk more openly [about sex and sexuality] amongst their friends and other mums their age, and with their kids, too,” Mackey told British Vogue in January. “I think it’s cool that it’s bringing people together, I mean, it certainly feels like it is starting to move that way. I like the idea that we’re creating a generation of really open-minded people.”

‘Death on the Nile’

Emma Mackey’s big screen moment comes with the October release of ‘Death on the Nile’. Mackey plays Jacqueline ‘Jackie’ De Bellefort, originally played by Mia Farrow in 1978. Kenneth Branagh, who also directs the film and is one of the producers, stars as the Belgian detective in hot pursuit of a killer sailing through Egypt in his adaptation of the Agatha Christie thriller set for release Dec. 18, COVID-19 willing.

Mackey reveals being inspired beyond words by the incredible cast members who include: ‘Wonder Woman's’ Gal Gadot, ‘Call Me By Your Name’s’ Armie Hammer, ‘Black Panther’ actress Letitia Wright, ‘Game Of Thrones’ star Rose Leslie, along with Annette Bening, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders and Sophie Okonedo. Summing up the film’s mood, Branagh promises “dark and lusty.”

Mackey’s Passion for Permaculture

Emma Mackey’s most interesting interview comment has nothing to do with sex education or murder mysteries. “I’m not going to be an actor for the rest of my life,” she tells Hanna Flint over a gin and tonic. “I’m going to have a farm at some point and just get into permaculture – you know, sustainable farming.”

This might explain Mackey’s love of Stella McCartney.
