Anais Pouliot In 'Ghostmother' By Herring & Herring for 'Fit to Print' #1

There is a technical tradition behind the concept of a ‘Ghostmother’ inserting herself into a child’s photograph, taken in the 1800s. A quick survey of the term immediately draws us into the therapeutic, nothing to do with emulsion or shutter speed,  concept of the mother who was never there. If you believe in the Jungian concept of the cultural unconscious — as I do — then the Ghost Mother is she who is always there in memory — the very opposite the real one who isn’t.

What a fascinating conceptual backdrop for Herring & Herring’s portraits of Anais Pouliot for their new magazine Fit for Print. Veronique Tristam styles a deeply sensual Anais — who has perhaps landed on the Wicked Witch of the East — in her own pursuit of red shoe power. I so love it when photographers are true artists — moving onto their own stage and taking their smarts along for a stellar performance. /Makeup by Yuko Mizuno; hair by Nelson Vercher ~ Anne
