US Women's World Cup Soccer Jersey Shatters All Men's Records | NIKE Now #1 Bra Seller In US AOC Eye

Women’s Soccer marches forward with escalating fanfare, breaking a new record at Nike. The world’s great sports brand Nike has sold more USA Women’s World Cup jerseys in its online store than it has any other soccer team shirt in the same season. Business Insider reports that the sale includes men’s kits and jerseys from teams like Brazil and Barcelona.

“The USA Women’s home jersey is now the No. 1 soccer jersey, men’s or women’s, ever sold on Nike.com in one season,” said Nike CEO Mark Parker. “The exposure is driving outstanding sell-through in kits, high-performance bras and lifestyle extensions,” he added, stating that Nike is now the biggest seller of bras in Northern America for the first time in the brand’s history.

Take that gut punch, Victoria’s Secret. WWD is posting the stat, also. Nike said ‘bras’ not ‘sports bras’. Incroyable!

Paid less than their male counterparts, US Women’s Soccer is now in litigation with the league. For at least 5 years, the women have been pointing out — to no avail — that they are bringing in the bucks for US Soccer, but don’t get the pay.

Tory Burch Asks Forbes Summit Why The Debate Around Equal Pay For Women Continues

Forbes considers Tory Burch to be one of America’s richest self-made women, estimating her net worth at $850 million. Judged today by her competence, strategic thinking and brand positioning, Tory Burch, who previously worked at Ralph Lauren and Vera Wang, says that when she launched her lifestyle brand in 2004, she wan’t taken very seriously.

Burch joined ultimate equal-pay activist Lilly Ledbetter to discuss the impact of the gender pay gap in a Forbes Women’s Summit discussion moderated by Cosmopolitan editor Jessica Pels. Ledbetter is known as the Alabama area manager at a Goodyear plant who learned through an anonymous note that she was paid 35%-40% less than men in her same position.

Ledbetter’s case wound its way through the US court system, until the Supreme Court in 2007 overturned a $3 million verdict in her favor, ruling that pay discrimination lawsuits must filed within 180 days of her first unequal paycheck. President Obama effectively nullified the court’s decision in 2009, making the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, the first new law of his administration. Obama stipulated that the statute of limitations for filing equal-pay lawsuits based on pay discrimination resets with each new paycheck that is part of the discriminatory act.

Lovers of Left Bank Pictures' Netflix series'The Crown' had a rude awakening last week, learning that 'The Crown' star Claire Foy -- that would be Queen Elizabeth II -- was paid less than her male co-star Matt Smith, playing Prince Philip. Foy herself won't benefit from the new policy, because she is replaced by Olivia Colman playing a new and older Queen next season. 

Left Bank Pictures apologized on Tuesday, issuing a statement saying “We want to apologize to both Claire Foy and to Matt Smith, brilliant actors and friends, who have found themselves at the center of a media storm this week through no fault of their own. Claire and Matt are incredibly gifted actors who, along with the wider cast on The Crown, have worked tirelessly to bring our characters to life with compassion and integrity.” 

In a not very subtle attempt to protect Matt Smith, Left Bank said that they are solely “responsible for budgets and salaries; the actors are not aware of who gets what, and cannot be held personally responsible for the pay of their colleagues.” They also claimed to be “absolutely united with the fight for fair pay, free of gender bias, and for a re-balancing of the industry’s treatment of women.”

Tennis champion Martina Navratilova, winner of nine Wimbledon Ladies' championship trophies shares her furor over discovering the full extent of BBC pay discrimination in an interview airing Monday night, writes The Guardian.  In an interview for Panorama: Britain's Equal Pay Scandal, Navratilova reveals her shock when she discovered that John McEnroe is paid 10 times as much as she is for covering Wimbledon for the BBC. 

Navratilova tells Panorama that she was paid about £15,000, while McEnroe's published salary revealed last summer is between £150,000 and £199,999. 

Navratilova said she was told she was getting paid a comparable amount to men doing the same job as her, adding: “We were not told the truth, that’s for sure.” “It’s still the good old boys’ network ... The bottom line is that male voices are valued more than women’s voices,” she said, adding that her agent will ask for more money in the future.

BBC Sport defended the discrepancy, saying McEnroe’s role was of “a different scale, scope and time commitment”, to Navratilova, adding: “They are simply not comparable.”

BBC China Editor Carrie Gracie Resigns Over Refusal To Grant Her Equal Pay For Equal Status, Quality Work

We have a super high-profile resignation at the BBC. China editor Carrie Gracie gave the BBC months to rectify her unequal pay -- the very condition under which she came to the BBC in the first place three decades ago. In an open letter just published, she outlines all the ways the BBC tried to get around this fundamental concept -- that a woman editor should have salary parity with men, and especially one as qualified as Gracie.

Because British taxpayers funds the BBC, Gracie writes: "I believe you have a right to know that it is breaking equality law and resisting pressure for a fair and transparent pay structure."

No intelligent organization would want to run the risk that Gracie would go public and resign. It IS about power when a group of men calculate that an accomplished woman with a global following won't have the nerve to walk -- and tell the whole world her story, as she slams the door behind her.

"The data comes from the White House’s annual report to Congress, which was released Friday, and which shows the salary of each employee. To calculate the gender pay gap, economist Mark Perry compared the median salary of male staffers ($115,000) to the median salary for female staffers ($72,650). Initially, media outlets reported a significantly smaller disparity, but their numbers were incorrectly based on mean rather than median salaries. 

As the Washington Post reports, the 37-percent gap is more than double the national 17-percent gender pay gap, and it’s wider than the national gender pay gap in 1980, as reported by Pew Research..
