AOC isn’t prepared to make the case for the influence of Italian futurism in the campaign. But the film supporting the Massimo Dutti campaign with models Rebecca Leigh Longendyke, Ji Shun, Ylang Messenguiral, and Cyrielle Lalande has a very self-absorbed intellectualism.
Colin Dodgson [IG] is the photographer, with film direction by MartinSalvador Studio [IG].

In a week when America is just shaken by turbulent weather, the highest temperatures ever recorded, flash floods everywhere, multi-million dollar homes sliding down the hill in California and never-before-seen creatures crawling out of the sea, the message in fashion is that we are losing any semblance of progress in sustainability efforts.

Massimo Dutti shares its summer getaway collection “Sul Mare” with a focus on surface interest fabrics like raffia and crochet and angular cuts. The sophisticated collection modeled by Nikki McGuire is heavy with a rough elegance vibe through its use of natural fabrics including linen.
Styled by Delphine Danhier, the collection is photographed by Misha Taylor [IG], who captures the watery tie-dye prints and classic stripes.
Focus on Linen
Linen is both linen as we know it [which is better than most fabrics] but also 100% European grown linen. This linen is grown without artificial watering and no GMO seeds and defoliants are used. It is produced in Western Europe and complies with the EUROPEAN FLAX® standard of the European Confederation of Flax and Hemp (CELC). Also this item is made in Portugal.
Calling Out Ramie
Massimo Dutti is also using ramie, an eco friendly fabric and the highly sustainable fiber, that is airy and beautiful. Ramie is made from the stalks of flowers and plants and is a chic vegan silk alternative or very lightweight linen which is lighter and airier, while obviously tailoring well.
Actually, I just did a ramie search on MD, and all these items are made with the fiber. It appears that most or all of the Massimo Dutti ramie products are also made in Portugal, which has a better chance of eco-friendly dye processes and positive worker welfare.

The Case for Elevated Basics
The fashion trends term describing the Spring 2023 Massimo Dutti Limited Edition collection is ‘elevated basics’. Every fashion-aware person self-defines their own vision of ‘elevated basics’, but Massimo Dutti’s 2023 vision is one of sophisticated, chic simplicity and clarity.
The new campaign highlights models Ella Mccutcheon, Imaan Hammam, Tara Halliwell and Yilan Hua in images by Ezra Petronio [IG].
The vision is not a boring one, but more of a timeless, body-aware, polished, sensual approach in black and cream.
Skirts are longer for seekers of elevated basics, silhouettes are fluid. AOC asks if the long column of a dress is a modern woman’s caftan.
Note that caftans are showing up in men’s collections also, but the narrow, sleeveless column dress remains a typically female choice, except in the LGBTQIA+ community.

Spain’s fashion brand Massimo Dutti, part of Inditex, turns our attention to their Spring Summer 2022 ‘Swim Edit’, featuring the always beloved, sensual and beautiful Edita Vilkeviciute. Edita is photographed by Bela Adler [IG] in lots of summer whites with contrasts of browns and hits of bright colors.
It appears that a very significant amount of the swimwear {70% estimate, maybe higher] is made of at least 75% recycled polyamide. The brand writes: “This fiber is created using the waste product reclaimed from other polyamide products. By transforming this waste into a new resource, we reduce the production of virgin raw materials and the consumption of water, energy and natural resources.”
