Burberry Summer 2023 Swimwear Collection Channels Adventure and Burberry Check
/British luxury house Burberry unveiled its Summer 2023 Swimwear Collection channeling the brand’s signature code of adventure.
It was Jacqueline Dillemman - a buyer in Burberry’s Paris store, who had a flash of inspiration in 1967, while preparing a presentation for the British ambassador Sir Patrick Reilley.
Dillemman removed [cut out] the check lining from a coat lining and wrapped it around luggage and an umbrella. Voilà. The Burberry Check was reborn for today’s world.
There’s zero politics that I see in the campaign. But there’s much about the ‘60s and early ‘70s that did embrace a revolutionary optimism among open-minded young people worldwide.
This early concept of the global citizen was not universally shared in America or Britain or in most countries of the world. But the idea took root in the minds of millions of young people, who never dreamed that it would be so difficult to get to the promised land 60+ years later. ~ Anne

Madonna and Religion
As society, are we moving on from that [patriarchal] world?
We definitely are not moving on, we are moving backwards. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be having discussions on whether or not women are allowed to make choices over their bodies in America.
Are you a pessimist?
I have to be optimistic otherwise I don’t know how I could go on.
Note that is the identical viewpoint expressed by Natalie Portman in our Miss Dior fragrance post yesterday. I do believe, however, that we must take a new approach.

We’re having visions of Tianna St. Louis meets Rafael Pavarotti and Ib Kamara and then Edward Enninful pops in to see how everyone is doing. Oh yes, put her in Erdem.
Oh wait — it’s coming into view. British Vogue can tell the famous story in which Queen Elizabeth & Ghana President Nkrumah danced a ‘Diplomatic Foxtrot’ in Ghana. It was a highest level mission that required the Queen to persuade Nkrumah to favor Britain and not make an alliance with Russia.
Her Majesty succeeded splendidly. Come ‘on. You guys love that idea and we can give the world a history lesson at the same time.
Perhaps you can borrow a royal tiara for Tianna St. Louis to wear as the Queen. This was a huge story for AOC when I investigated this segment from ‘The Crown’.

Writing for WSJ Magazine, Elisa Lipsky-Karasa swears that COVID-19 has not meant the end of high-octane fashion. All reports on the high-end luxury market are that she’s correct. In fact, the rich have become disproportionately richer during the pandemic, but I’m not seeing very much of a “let them eat cake” attitude going on out there.
In a nod to Stella McCartney’s fantastic pre-fall collection, let’s hope that women of means are at least thinking about sustainability before rapturing on the latest pair of 4” heels. My observations suggest that there’s very solid movement in the direction of fashion awareness on the sustainability front.
